What are the pros and cons of delayed gratification?
Have you ever heard the phrase “ Good boys finish last”. Well
that’s one con of delayed gratification. I believe that people who have so much
patience tend to push off important things. Giving a student a reward during
their work can create a negative frustration than providing motivation. This is
because it creates distraction. The student will only think of the reward and
he/she is not going to concentrate on their work.
I answer my
question from real experience. Last year my parents told me that they were
going to buy me a new car if I got good grades the whole year. As the year went
by I noticed my self not paying attention. I was only doing my work because of
the reward at the end. I didn’t learn anything during my senior year.
Many people
say that being patient has its rewards. I believe that it is true on some
cases. This relates to another phrase. “Good things come to those who wait”.
Whenever I hear this I think about how much I waited to come to America. When I
finally got here it was like a dream. I felt like it was worth it. Many
researchers believe that people with delayed gratification tend to do better in
school than people who don’t. As I said on my previous blog, I don’t believe
that a simple test, the Marshmallow test, can show you if you are going to do well
in life or not.
Delayed
gratification has its pros and cons. But the best way to find out if we are
going to succeed in life is only if we wait to see what the future holds.
